Via Alta Idra: A Hut-to-Hut Hike in Switzerland

Hut-to-hut hiking in Switzerland: discover the Via Alta Idra in Ticino

Lara works as a physiotherapist in Switzerland and headed into the mountains of Ticino with her boyfriend for a hut-to-hut trek along the Via Alta Idra. Mist, rugged mountain passes, remote huts and ice-cold mountain lakes made it a truly special adventure.

“I was very glad I had brought earplugs, because there is quite a lot of snoring in a hut like that.”
Bring earplugs. In a mountain hut, you often sleep in one room with many other people. A good night’s sleep is invaluable after a long day of hiking.
Keep your plans flexible. Mountain weather can change quickly. Sometimes spending an extra night in a hut is the wisest choice.
Check the difficulty of each stage in advance. A T3 or T4 route is very different from an ordinary hiking trail, and technical sections require additional experience.
Bring enough warm and dry clothing. Even when the valley is enjoying beautiful summer weather, conditions high in the mountains can change quickly.
Take the time to enjoy your surroundings along the way. A mountain lake, marmots or simply sitting down to enjoy the view are just as much a part of the trek as the hiking itself.
