German Course through PhysioMatch
For physiotherapists in Switzerland, it is required to have a B2 level in one of the official Swiss languages in order to have your diploma recognized. This can be German, French, or Italian, with the majority of job opportunities located in the German-speaking part of the country. For this reason, PhysioMatch offers the opportunity to take a German language course, so that you are well prepared to start working.
Good communication with patients is essential for a successful practice. Therefore, it is important that you speak sufficient German to communicate effectively with both colleagues and patients. What “sufficient” exactly means may vary from one organization to another.
By improving your language level in advance, you not only increase your chances of finding a job as a physiotherapist, but you can also be of immediate value in practice.
Different language levels
Your level of German is expressed in a language level. For each level you can take an exam at one of the recognized examination institutes. These are the different levels:
- A1: Beginner. You know individual words and simple sentences.
- A2: Basic. You can have short conversations about everyday topics and manage in simple situations.
- B1: Independent. You can hold a normal conversation and express your opinions.
- B2: Advanced. You can speak fluently without much hesitation and take part in discussions.
- C1: Highly advanced. You understand complex, lengthy texts and academic language.
- C2: Native-level proficiency. Fully fluent and natural.
When can you apply and start working?
In Switzerland, it is possible to work with a B1 level of German. However, a B2 certificate is ultimately required for professional recognition. Generally, a B2 level is expected for a job interview, but in many cases a B1 level is sufficient. In some situations, you may already start working once you have begun a German course at B1 level.

PhysioMatch contract
PhysioMatch is able to provide better guidance when you have a reasonable level of German (A2–B1). For this reason, in many cases we are willing to contribute (largely) to the costs of a German language course. Agreements regarding the cost sharing are always laid down in writing in a contract.
The amount of our contribution depends on the following criteria:
- Your motivation to work in Switzerland.
- A strong and relevant qualification, such as a four-year bachelor’s degree.
- Flexibility: you are open to different regions, working hours, and types of institutions.
- Language aptitude and commitment: have you already made efforts to improve your German, or do you learn quickly? Through self study using these tips, you can already make significant progress.
- A positive PreCheck at the Swiss Red Cross.
Cost distribution of the language course
PhysioMatch is willing to reimburse the majority of the costs for a German language course, up to a maximum of €1,000*. The costs are spread across different language levels. For each language level, we expect a personal contribution of 25% of the course fees from you.
If you choose a relatively expensive course provider, it can be agreed in consultation with PhysioMatch to follow only part of the programme, for example from A2 to B2 or from A1 to B1. This helps keep the programme affordable and goal-oriented.
All agreements regarding cost sharing and the language programme to be followed are clearly set out in a contract in advance.
*Please note that the B2 final exam is not included in the courses. The cost of this exam is approximately €250.
The options
You can choose from various language schools, both online and on-site near you. Before starting a course, it is important to always consult with your contact person at PhysioMatch first to check whether the course is suitable.
Starting the language course
With online language courses, you can often start at any level at the beginning of each month. For on-site German courses, there are usually fewer entry points, typically only three to four times per year.

Advantages course
- You usually attend lessons in a group and in German (this has proven to be effective).
- You can choose in advance between an evening course, a weekend course, or an intensive course, depending on what best fits your schedule.
- You will receive course and practice materials so you can continue practicing outside of class.
What if I do not complete the course?
If you do not complete the course and/or do not start working through PhysioMatch, you are required to repay the amount advanced by PhysioMatch within one month after terminating the course.
The process in short
- Together with your contact person at PhysioMatch, you will determine your training needs in advance.
- You will then start practicing German independently, using our tips and guidance.
- You will receive an explanation of the contract and sign it together with PhysioMatch.
- After signing, you pay your agreed personal contribution of 25%. PhysioMatch will then register you for the course on the next working day, after which you can start immediately.
- During the programme, you will stay in regular contact with your PhysioMatch contact person about your progress in German.
- Once you have reached a new language level, you inform us so that we can record it. When you reach B1 level, we will put you in contact with suitable organizations as soon as possible for an initial introduction.
- Together with the organization, you decide whether you would like to start working or first visit for a trial day. If you follow a course via PhysioMatch, travel expenses are generally at your own cost.
