Tips and Tricks for an introductory talk by phone
To help you conduct the first telephone conversation with a potential employer, we have collected a number of tips here. We wish you good luck and hope you have a nice conversation!
Preparation
Agree a favorable time when you can have a quiet and focused conversation. Make sure that there is not too much ambient noise and that you can take notes during the conversation. For example, do not call while you are driving.
Read the website of the practice or clinic in advance. If there is not much information available, check whether the organisation is active elsewhere, for example on Facebook. You can always ask us for additional information.
Make sure you have a set of headphones so you can take notes during the conversation. You can also call hands free, but then you are often less understandable. You can of course propose a video call. This gives you a better impression and allows the employer to show the workplace.
Write down a number of questions you want to ask during the telephone conversation. This shows that you are well prepared and genuinely interested.
Examples of questions you can ask:
- When can I start?
- How good should my German be at the start?
- Which treatment methods are common?
- Should or can I take additional courses? Mention a course you would like to take.
- Are there options to guide local sports clubs?
If the conversation goes well and the employer asks you to visit, you can immediately make an appointment with the practice. You can also let them know later when you plan to come to Switzerland. You do not need to discuss this with us, although we would of course love to hear when you are going.
If you want to visit the practice, you can ask:
- Can I work with you for a half day?
- How do I get to you easily by public transport?
- Do you have any tips for an overnight stay in your area?
For a follow up conversation or if you are seriously considering working at this practice, you can also ask:
- Do you have any tips for looking for a home?
- Do I need a car for work?
- Do you have any tips for buying a used car?
