Step 6 Starting in Switzerland
Step 6 Starting in Switzerland
Plan at least 5 working days to arrange the most important matters. Some steps can already be prepared before you move.
What is the goal of this step
In this step you arrange the most important administrative matters after arrival, so you can start working and living without any issues. This includes registration with the municipality, your residence permit, insurance, bank account and phone.
Registering with the municipality
With your rental contract, passport and employment contract, you register with your municipality of residence. This must be done no later than 1 day before your first working day. The municipality will then start the application for your residence permit or refer you to the correct office in your canton.
When registering, immediately request a Wohnsitzbescheinigung. This proof of residence is often required for insurance and sometimes for opening a bank account.
Work and residence permit
The permit you usually need is the Aufenthaltsbewilligung B or permit B. The required documents differ per canton. Search on the website of your canton for Aufenthaltsbewilligung or permit and follow the local instructions.
Once you have received the permit, provide a copy to your employer.
Insurance
In Switzerland, you are required to take out mandatory health insurance for the entire family. You must submit a copy of your policy within three months after registering with the municipality.
In addition, we recommend taking out liability insurance (Haftpflichtversicherung).

Bank account
To receive your salary, you need a Swiss bank account. Officially, you often need your residence permit, but this can sometimes take time. With a Wohnsitzbescheinigung, you can often open a bank account earlier, for example at the Kantonalbank or UBS.
Phone number
Check whether your current subscription is valid and affordable in Switzerland. If not, you may usually terminate your subscription due to emigration. To compare Swiss mobile phone subscriptions, you can use this website: Comparis mobile subscriptions.
What to bring to Switzerland
Make sure you gather important documents in time. This helps with registration, permits, and recognition.
- Passport
- Passport photos
- Employment contract
- Rental contract or proof of address
- Birth certificate if requested by your canton
- Original diplomas with course lists and translations if applicable
- CCPS and SRK documents if applicable
Meeting new people
PhysioMatch knows physiotherapists in several regions who enjoy meeting new people. If you would like to get in touch with others in your region, let your contact person know. You can also be added to WhatsApp communities in Zurich, Bern or Lucerne.
Once you have completed all the steps above, you are ready to start working and living in Switzerland.
